Brick & Stone Hardscaping in the Fan & Museum District

The Fan and the Museum District are full of historic brick rowhouses, narrow lots and shaded courtyards, and the outdoor work on these homes needs a careful hand. RVA Hardscapes is a family-run, fully insured crew with over 35 years of experience building and restoring residential patios, walkways, stoops, steps and retaining walls throughout Richmond's most beloved neighborhoods. Many Fan homes have front stoops that have settled, cracked or pulled away from the house over decades of freeze and thaw. We rebuild them with solid footings, sound brick or stone, and clean mortar joints that respect the look of the block. For the front of the house we lay brick walkways and bluestone paths that drain properly and stay level. In the back, a small courtyard patio can turn a tight yard into a real outdoor room, and we size pavers, stone and layout to fit the space without crowding it. Where grade changes, a low retaining wall or a set of new steps keeps soil in place and makes the yard easier to use. Because access can be tight on city streets, we plan material delivery, staging and cleanup so your neighbors are not disrupted. Every project starts with a walk-through and a clear written estimate, and we stand behind the work. Rowhouse stoops in the Fan and Museum District

Front stoops on older Richmond rowhouses take a lot of weather. Over the years, mortar joints wear out, bricks loosen, treads tip, and water gets in and makes it worse. Depending on the condition, a stoop may need repointing (replacing worn mortar), resetting loose brick or stone treads, or a rebuild from a sound base. When we rebuild, we work to match the existing brick and tread stone so the stoop still suits the house and its neighbors.

New steps for newer homes

From a front entry in Short Pump to a set of garden steps down a slope in Midlothian or Chester, new steps can be built in stone, brick or pavers to match your walkway or patio.

What makes steps safe and comfortable

• Even risers. Every step should be the same height so no one catches a toe.
• Deep enough treads for a full foot.
• A slight pitch on each tread so water runs off and doesn't freeze in a puddle.
• A solid footing so the steps don't settle or pull away from the house.
• Handrails where they're needed. We'll talk through whether your steps need one.
