Stoops & Steps in Richmond, VA

Steps get used every day, so they need to be solid, even and comfortable underfoot. RVA Hardscapes builds and rebuilds front stoops, porch steps, patio steps and garden steps in brick, natural stone and pavers.

Rowhouse stoops in the Fan and Museum District

Front stoops on older Richmond rowhouses take a lot of weather. Over the years, mortar joints wear out, bricks loosen, treads tip, and water gets in and makes it worse. Depending on the condition, a stoop may need repointing (replacing worn mortar), resetting loose brick or stone treads, or a rebuild from a sound base. When we rebuild, we work to match the existing brick and tread stone so the stoop still suits the house and its neighbors.

New steps for newer homes

From a front entry in Short Pump to a set of garden steps down a slope in Midlothian or Chester, new steps can be built in stone, brick or pavers to match your walkway or patio.

What makes steps safe and comfortable

• Even risers. Every step should be the same height so no one catches a toe.
• Deep enough treads for a full foot.
• A slight pitch on each tread so water runs off and doesn't freeze in a puddle.
• A solid footing so the steps don't settle or pull away from the house.
• Handrails where they're needed. We'll talk through whether your steps need one.
