Paver Patios in Richmond, VA
A paver patio gives you a level, solid place to put a table, a grill or a few chairs, and it's one of the most practical ways to get more use out of a backyard. RVA Hardscapes builds concrete paver patios for homes around Richmond, Short Pump, Midlothian and Mechanicsville.
What goes into a patio that stays level
Most patio problems start below the surface. We dig out to firm soil, then build up a gravel base in compacted layers. Pavers are set on a screeded bedding layer, held in place with edge restraint so the borders don't creep, and finished with joint sand. The surface is pitched slightly away from your house so rain runs off instead of pooling against the foundation. Base depth depends on your soil and how the patio will be used, and we'll explain what your yard needs during the estimate.

Choosing pavers
Pavers come in a wide range of sizes, colors and finishes, from smooth modern slabs to tumbled pavers with an older, worn look. A contrasting border (often a "soldier course" of pavers set end to end) gives the patio a finished edge. We'll help you compare samples so you can see colors in daylight before you decide.
Planning the size and shape
Think about how you'll use the space: a dining table for six needs more room than two chairs and a side table. We'll walk the yard with you, look at slope, doors, downspouts and trees, and sketch a layout that fits. If you already have a small concrete pad by the back door, a paver patio can often be designed to extend or replace it.
Common questions
- How long does a paver patio take? Most patio projects take one to two weeks, depending on size, site access and weather. We'll give you a timeline with your estimate.
- Do pavers need upkeep? Sweep them, rinse them now and then, and top up the joint sand every few years.
- Can you add steps or a seating wall? Yes. These can be planned along with the patio. See Stoops & Steps.
