Hardscaping in Mechanicsville, VA

Mechanicsville and the surrounding northern Hanover area mix long-established homes with newer neighborhoods, and each one calls for outdoor work that is built to last through hot summers and freezing winters. RVA Hardscapes is a family-run, fully insured crew with over 35 years of experience building and repairing residential patios, walkways, stoops, steps and retaining walls for Mechanicsville homeowners. A well-built patio adds usable living space to the back of your house, and we offer pavers, natural stone and brick in styles that suit the architecture of your home. Walkways and front steps are the first thing guests notice, so we focus on solid footings, even risers and surfaces that drain well and stay safe in wet or icy weather. If your yard slopes toward the house or has an eroding bank, a properly engineered retaining wall can protect your foundation and give you flat ground for gardens or play areas. We can also repair settled pavers, cracked stoops and leaning walls before small problems become expensive ones. From the first conversation to the final cleanup, you will deal directly with the people doing the work. We explain your options plainly, provide a clear written estimate and respect your property while we are on site. Rowhouse stoops in the Fan and Museum District

Front stoops on older Richmond rowhouses take a lot of weather. Over the years, mortar joints wear out, bricks loosen, treads tip, and water gets in and makes it worse. Depending on the condition, a stoop may need repointing (replacing worn mortar), resetting loose brick or stone treads, or a rebuild from a sound base. When we rebuild, we work to match the existing brick and tread stone so the stoop still suits the house and its neighbors.

New steps for newer homes

From a front entry in Short Pump to a set of garden steps down a slope in Midlothian or Chester, new steps can be built in stone, brick or pavers to match your walkway or patio.

What makes steps safe and comfortable

• Even risers. Every step should be the same height so no one catches a toe.
• Deep enough treads for a full foot.
• A slight pitch on each tread so water runs off and doesn't freeze in a puddle.
• A solid footing so the steps don't settle or pull away from the house.
• Handrails where they're needed. We'll talk through whether your steps need one.
