Patios & Retaining Walls in Midlothian & Chesterfield

South of the James River, Midlothian and Chesterfield County homes often sit on rolling lots with real grade changes, which makes thoughtful hardscaping both practical and beautiful. RVA Hardscapes is a family-run, fully insured crew with over 35 years of experience building residential patios, walkways, stoops, steps and retaining walls for homeowners across this area. Retaining walls are often the first step on a sloped yard. We build them in block, natural stone or brick with proper drainage, compacted bases and clean caps so they hold back soil season after season. Once the grade is under control, a paver or flagstone patio can turn a hillside backyard into a flat, comfortable place to gather. We also install walkways that connect the driveway, front door and garden, and we rebuild worn stoops and steps so every entrance is safe and welcoming. Chesterfield neighborhoods vary from established brick colonials to newer subdivisions, and we match materials and style to your house instead of using a one-size-fits-all design. Every job begins with a site visit, honest advice about what will last, and a clear written estimate. During the work we protect your landscaping, keep the area orderly and finish with a full cleanup. Rowhouse stoops in the Fan and Museum District

Front stoops on older Richmond rowhouses take a lot of weather. Over the years, mortar joints wear out, bricks loosen, treads tip, and water gets in and makes it worse. Depending on the condition, a stoop may need repointing (replacing worn mortar), resetting loose brick or stone treads, or a rebuild from a sound base. When we rebuild, we work to match the existing brick and tread stone so the stoop still suits the house and its neighbors.

New steps for newer homes

From a front entry in Short Pump to a set of garden steps down a slope in Midlothian or Chester, new steps can be built in stone, brick or pavers to match your walkway or patio.

What makes steps safe and comfortable

• Even risers. Every step should be the same height so no one catches a toe.
• Deep enough treads for a full foot.
• A slight pitch on each tread so water runs off and doesn't freeze in a puddle.
• A solid footing so the steps don't settle or pull away from the house.
• Handrails where they're needed. We'll talk through whether your steps need one.
